Delightful, Everyday Organic 2016 Chianti. $19

Winery:   The Fattoria Poggerino is now considered among the finest sources for Chianti. Vinous writes of their wines’ “remarkable purity and nuance,” and Rajat Parr calls them “some of the purest expressions of the grape in Italy.” Their organically farmed, pure sangiovese cuvées are simply delicious.

Appellation:   Poggerino makes several excellent Chianti Classico cuvées, and the just-arrived 2016s are magnificent. Their simplest cuvée is called Labirinto, made from the younger vines from their Classico vineyard. It’s a tremendous value at under $4/glass.

Wine:   Poggerino releases Labirinto two years ahead of their other wines, and in its youth it’s punchy, vigorous and vibrant. With two extra years under its belt, the 2016 Labirinto has matured and melted into a gorgeous glass of everyday Sangiovese. The nose shows dried roses, with plum and sweet cherry notes. The mouth is less exuberant and more sophisticated than in its youth, with handsome tannins under a smooth patina of fruit jam.

Pairing:   Everyone seems to be a home baker these days — a development we encourage and celebrate. This wine is a no brainer pairing for our favorite pizza recipe (dough, sauce). And if you see yourself becoming a lifelong (or even pandemic-long) breadhead, we highly recommend a baking steel.
