1. Garenne Sancerre “Silex” 2022
GRAPE: 100% sauvignon blanc
TYPE: pure, unoaked Sancerre from flint soils
YEAR: 2022, very hot and dry
NOTES: This cuvée used to be called “Infidele,” but is now “Silex” — it comes from a small parcel laden with flint, whose characteristic aromas include a touch of gunflint smokiness. This wine has always offered extraordinary density and a sumptuous mouthfeel, and that is a feature of the 2022 vintage as well.
FOOD: scallops; goat cheese on crackers
AVAILABLE: $42/bot ($33.6 w/ followup coupon)
2. Collet Chablis 1er “Forêts” 2022
GRAPE: 100% chardonnay
TYPE: Chablis raised in old oak and concrete egg
YEAR: 2022, very hot and dry
NOTES: It’s raised mostly in cement eggs, which add depth and texture to the crisp minerals and fruit. This is delightful, complete white Burgundy on its own, but also a terrific match with food. Burghound cites “minerality on the moderately austere and quite dry finale.” He concludes, “I like both the balance and the delivery and this is one to consider.”
FOOD: gnocchi in a lemon butter sauce
Available: $42/bot ($33.6 w/ followup coupon)
3. Maillet Macon-Verzé 2022
GRAPE: 100% chardonnay
TYPE: unoaked biodynamic Chardonnay from the Maconnais
YEAR: 2022, very hot and dry
NOTES: Maillet relies on indigenous yeasts for spontaneous fermentation, and never rushes the process, allowing it to proceed for months if needed. This cuvée is rich and beautiful, with noticeably ample gras and roundness alongside excellent acidity. Neal Martin called it “lovely” and awarded it 90 points, praising its “crisp nose of lemon rind and crushed stone.”
FOOD: butter-basted fish or roast chicken
Available: $35/bot ($28 w/ followup coupon)
