1. Tunnel St-Joseph 2022
GRAPE: 100% Syrah
TYPE: Northern Rhône Syrah
YEAR: 2022, warm and dry
NOTES: Tunnel’s vines are all in the south, and we think it’s best considered a junior-varsity version of his iconic Cornas. Drawn from 40+ year old vines and clocking in at a cool 13% alcohol, this is vibrant, intense, Syrah with Tunnel’s signature polish and class. There is a pleasant nose of dark fruit supported by exceedingly fine-grained tannins, and also excellent length.
FOOD: lamb meatballs

2. Morey Santenay 1er cru “Grand Clos Roussot” 2022
GRAPE: 100% Pinot Noir
TYPE: Red Burgundy from the southern end of the Côte d’Or
YEAR: 2022, hot and very dry
NOTES: Morey is known for his whites, but his reds are extraordinary and carry the same precision and clarity. The Santenay Grand Clos Roussot is a terrific, punchy Côte de Beaune red with unusual concentration and Morey’s signature polish. Look for dark blue fruits with earth and briary black raspberry. We think its a very good value and should drink well immediately.
FOOD: tuna sashimi

3. Ravaut Corton-Bressandes Grand Cru 2021
GRAPE: 100% Pinot Noir
TYPE: Grand Cru red Burgundy from the famous Hill of Corton
YEAR: 2021, cool and rainy
NOTES: Bressandes, along with Renard and Clos du Roi, is considered the finest plot on the famous hill. The nose is massive and perfumed, with wild red fruits, fresh violets, and cocoa. The mouth is big, smooth, young and compact — Corton is a traditionally long-lived wine, and the Ravaut’s 2021 is classical and excellent.
FOOD: roast chicken with mushrooms
Available: $99 ($79.2 w/ followup coupon)
