 | The 2021s from Gros are an unmitigated triumph… (+) The 2021s from Gros are an unmitigated triumph, and even more impressive given the difficult vintage. Abundant rain and a cooler summer produced wines with less concentration than the last few scorching hot years – a welcome relief from the chewy, syrah-like Pinots of recent memory. Across the board Gros’s 2021s are elegant, refined, and middle weight, with subtly extracted tannins and beautiful length.Their lighter touch has meant they’re more charming young than we expected. Drawn mostly from a plot abutting Musigny Grand Cru, this overperforms it’s village-level billing by a mile. Neal Martin of Vinous found “an enticing nose with pressed violet and iris,” with “supple tannins, velvety smooth, and fine depth.” This always a top cuvée at Gros and the 2021 is no different. It’s elegant and classy, full of tension, precision, and the domaine’s signature smoky polish.  | Arnaud Baillot is a bit of an anomaly… (+) Arnaud Baillot is a bit of an anomaly in Burgundy – he has no family connection to wine or the region, and has only been making wine for six years. His wife Laure is of a storied Burgundian family (Hudelot-Noëllat), but they have short winemaking experience and almost zero reviews. And since a hidden gem is the perpetual pursuit of all importers, we squeezed an appointment in late in the afternoon of our final tasting day this spring -- we're certainly glad we did.The Volnay 1er cru Mitans 2022 is everything in the village wine, but more so. Mitans is on the northern side of Volnay, near the Pommard border. It produces intense, concentrated wines full of compact fruit and character. Baillot’s is bold and beautiful, with beautiful spice elements in the nose (cinnamon, clove) alongside violets and cassis. As with all of Baillot’s wines, the oak is minimal and perfectly integrated. A cheerful twentysomething with a quick smile and friendly demeanor, he’s traveled the world gaining extensive viticultural experience, and has brought real energy and renewed focus to his family’s tiny 5-hectare gem of an estate in Morey-St-Denis. He’s officially organic as of this year, but has already started the process of biodynamic certification. He has abandoned herbicides, planted cover crops, and this year begins an agroforestry project in the name of vineyard biodiversity.Ruchots was a real stunner this year, very ripe and expressive with loads of lush, inky fruit. It’s got the extraction and length to match. Léon’s vines here cover a wide swath of the terroir within the vineyard, and he credits the diversity of soils with the complexity of the wine. He’s able to blend elegant juice from up-slope stony sectors with rich juice from down-slope clay-rich soils; and the resulting wine has nearly unmatched complexity for its level. From the warmest, driest year in recent memory, winemakers managed to coax vibrant and beautifully balanced, sporting low alcohol and classic Burgundian finesse. Philippe Cheron is an excellent winemaker farming 10 hectares around the Côte de Nuits -- limited oak, whole clusters where needed, sleek, modern, terroir-transparent, muscled Burgundies.La Romanée finds bedrock quickly below its shallow surface soils, and this makes for elegant, long-lived bottles. In 2022 it has a beautifully expressive nose supported by well rounded tannins. Morris called it “lifted and charming, not especially Gevrey in character, tasting more like a Chambolle-Vosne mix.” There is truth in this, and that may be why we love the wine so much: beautiful fruit, superb length, and the promise of a long life. They’ve just welcomed the 6th generation into the business, and year after year turn out humbly delicious red Burgundies. Their 2019s are terrific, with gorgeous textures and excellent aging potential.Combottes is a premier cru surrounded on all sides by famous Grand Crus, and in good years could easily be mistaken for one. 2019 is just such a year. There is an expressive nose of dark fruit with a certain sweetness about it. In the mouth the wine is both dense and intense. If the weight is less than a Grand Cru, it is not by much. His style is one of restraint and precision. We think of them as “minimalist” white wines — what’s not there (oak, butter, heaviness) is as important as what is there. Morey’s Puligny vines are in Truffiere, a premier cru near the top of the slope near La Garenne. These wines typically need a year or more after bottling to show their real character, and the 2023 is likely to tread the same path. It’s chiseled and precise with delicate fruit and mid-acidity. From Morris: “A gorgeous bouquet, fully ripe but with energy, yellow and green fruit once could almost say, ripe limes and mirabelle. 13.3% natural which makes a great balance. After years in Paris, Yann returned home in the 1990s to focus the estate on fine wine, building an impressive reputation in the process. Jancis Robinson writes of his “really artisanal wine with masses of integrity and bags of personality,” while the Wine Advocate calls it “one of the most exciting estates in Crozes-Hermitage.”The Hill of Hermitage has been famous for centuries. Yann Chave’s Hermitage 2023 offers a beautiful floral nose dominated by violets, superb balance across the palate, plenty of concentration without heaviness, and a long, lingering finish. The bouquet is floral with serious concentration behind the perfume, showing lime notes, impressive tension, and a substantial core of fruit. We recently enjoyed one of the last magnums of our 2002 from Bardoux, which was mature and delicious but not the least bit tired. The 2004 vintage produced wines with a bit more structure, and these recently disgorged magnums have the capacity for plenty of additional cellaring.The blend is 20% Pinot Meunier, 30% Pinot Noir, and 50% Chardonnay, with an 8g/L dosage. The nose is terrific, with woodsy, savory notes alongside the pear fruit. In the mouth is chalky and fine, with an astonishing level of vibrancy for its age. Add that to a famously rich terroir and a deep, concentrated vintage and you have the makings of seriously impressive wine. If the village wine will benefit from time, the Fuées will need it; but we expect a very bright future. The nose is inky and expansive, with rose petals, baking spices, dried flowers and cassis. They farm a mouthwatering collection of vines in and around Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet, including all three famous Meursault premier crus. They farm organically, and use a long elevage in barrels then concrete eggs to give their wines a regal depth and complexity. These are some of our favorite white Burgundies from anywhere.Boyer’s Meursault 1er Charmes, usually the fattest and richest of the bunch, is excellent again this year. The nose is deeply floral with notes of pear and stones. The mouth is fresher and more vibrant than usual this year, with a touch of sucrocité balanced on a beam of tension. Burghound similarly found “excellent energy” and a “tension-filled, linear finish.” He counsels drinking after 2030, but given how well the 2022s are drinking already (“difficult to resist” says Vincent himself), this will be terrific even next year. | | The Domaine’s flagship is its Vosne-Romanée 1er cru monopole… (+) The Domaine’s flagship is its Vosne-Romanée 1er cru monopole “Clos des Reas,” a wine capable of giving much pleasure in its youth but which also ages gracefully. As Jasper Morris explained in his seminal book Inside Burgundy, “It makes a supremely elegant Vosne premier cru, relatively low in acid, but the softness is deceptive: the wine ages remarkably well.” The key to this magic may be the well-draining salmon colored marl that underlies it, but in the end the truth of the proposition is in the bottle. Both Ansonia père and Ansonia fils have fond memories of helping to harvest this parcel, and wine from many vintages inhabits the family cellars. White pepper and white tea mix with stewed pears and baked lemons; the nose is so remarkable you might forget to drink it. But once you do, the mouth explodes with broad intensity of flavor and a chiseled finish. The mouth is exceptional – rich and bold and muscled with a sleek texture and extremely long finish. The vines for this cuvée are part of Cheron’s family heritage – his grandfather bought them from Comte Ligier Belair in 1930, and with a smile he told us of enjoying bottles on Sundays with his father growing up. Allen Meadows (Burghound) awarded 92-95 points, finding a complex aromatic profile: “Ripe and fresh aromas of red and black cherry, plum and earth display a top note of kirsch.” He praised its “outstanding power,” and called it “definitely built to age.” Jasper Morris awarded the same score.
