His father Michel is never far away with ready counsel and advice, but this is Pierre’s ship now, and he’s steering it beautifully. Like many of his peer group Pierre has moved the domaine toward organics, and his wines are clean and pure – they sport the same polish as his fathers’ with perhaps a bit more concentration of fruit and slightly longer finishes.The 2023 Vosne-Romanée was particularly expressive from barrel, with lovely floral and spice notes against toasted oak. In the mouth there is both length and elegance that lingers on the palate, and the fruit is impeccable and very long. Less (-) | |

It shows a density and structure more like a premier cru than a village wine, with ripe black currant fruit and a refined palate that persists in a long and lovely finish. Less (-) | |

From the warmest, driest year in recent memory, winemakers managed to coax vibrant and beautifully balanced, sporting low alcohol and classic Burgundian finesse. Philippe Cheron is an excellent winemaker farming 10 hectares around the Côte de Nuits -- limited oak, whole clusters where needed, sleek, modern, terroir-transparent, muscled Burgundies.La Romanée finds bedrock quickly below its shallow surface soils, and this makes for elegant, long-lived bottles. In 2022 it has a beautifully expressive nose supported by well rounded tannins. Morris called it “lifted and charming, not especially Gevrey in character, tasting more like a Chambolle-Vosne mix.” There is truth in this, and that may be why we love the wine so much: beautiful fruit, superb length, and the promise of a long life.  | Justine Clerget has shown herself to be a remarkable talent in the last few… More (+) Justine Clerget has shown herself to be a remarkable talent in the last few years, and this tiny gem of domaine in Vougeot is still a largely undiscovered source. She has introduced organic viticulture, refined extraction, and has leaned into stem use. The resulting wines are classy and modern, but with an old school Burgundian soul.About 80% of the vines in the town of Vougeot are part of the enormous Clos Vougeot Grand Cru, but the other 20% covers some exceptional premier crus, including “Petits Vougeots,” which borders both Clos Vougeot and Le Musigny over the border. The Clergets’ plot here produces impressive wines, bolder than the Chambolles and approaching the concentration of the nearby Grand Cru. Broad, sturdy and delicious, this is not a wine you’ll soon forget. The 60 year old vines contribute exceptional richness, which Justine steers into a powerful but refined package with notes of cassis, violets, and plums. Burghound again found it “outstanding” and “beautifully textured,” concluding “This lilting effort is pretty much textbook Petits Vougeots.” Less (-) | |

They’ve just welcomed the 6th generation into the business, and year after year turn out humbly delicious red Burgundies. Their 2019s are terrific, with gorgeous textures and excellent aging potential.Combottes is a premier cru surrounded on all sides by famous Grand Crus, and in good years could easily be mistaken for one. 2019 is just such a year. There is an expressive nose of dark fruit with a certain sweetness about it. In the mouth the wine is both dense and intense. If the weight is less than a Grand Cru, it is not by much. Burghound awarded 91-94, calling it "one of the better recent vintages I have seen for this wine.' Less (-) |
