Neal Martin writes “I detect a change in tack rather than charting a totally different course.” Like many of his peer group Pierre has moved the domaine toward organics, and if his first few vintages at the helm are any indication, the future at Gros may be even brighter than the past.The 2022 Clos Vougeot a big wine, according to Neal Martin: “one of the fleshiest, more corpulent Clos de Vougeot wines that I met.” Burghound, too, found “richer, more powerful and more complex broad-shouldered flavors.” Martin also praised its “refined bouquet, understated at first, opening with black cherries and red plum scents, a touch of rose bush in the background.” This wine ages beautifully, turning regal and poised as it reaches past a decade. We’ve always loved the wines from the Amiot family, but we’re even more excited about where they’re going.The Grand Cru Clos de la Roche 2022 is built for a very long life. It has dense, dark cherry fruit mixed with a solid dose of oak. There is plenty of power here, and the length is exceptional. But patience will be required to enjoy it near its peak; Burghound (91-94pts) says “this is definitely a wine to buy and cellar as it’s not likely to be especially approachable young,” finding “power and muscle” with an “impressively long, austere, built-to-age and quite serious finale.” Less (-) | |

His father Michel is never far away with ready counsel and advice, but this is Pierre’s ship now, and he’s steering it beautifully. Like many of his peer group Pierre has moved the domaine toward organics, and his wines are clean and pure – they sport the same polish as his fathers’ with perhaps a bit more concentration of fruit and slightly longer finishes.The Clos Vougeot comes from a small plot in the Grand Maupertuis sector, considered the best part of that large Grand Cru vineyard. The vines produce rich, deeply colored wine that requires a few years to knit together. In 2023 it shows ripe dark fruit, toasty oak, mineral and earthy notes, with long persistence on the palate.
