It is unquestionably a wine of Grand Cru density and intensity, if in a charming, elegant way rather than bold and muscular. Dark fruit and oak come through the nose along with an earthy minerality. They farm organically, and use a long elevage in barrels then concrete eggs to give their wines a regal depth and complexity. These are some of our favorite white Burgundies from anywhere.
Puligny-Montrachet 1er cru “Cailleret” is a tiny five-owner premier cru just stone’s throw from the Grand Cru Chevalier Montrachet. The nose is extremely Puligny, intensely concentrated and very fine. The mouth shows superb tension over a core of dry stone fruit and faint spice.
