Cheron also has almost an acre in Mazoyères,” a climat in Charmes-Chambertin. (The wine may be labeled either “Mazoyères Grand Cru” or “Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru” at the producer’s election. Jasper Morris described it as having “immediate weight à la Charmes, but with a density and minerality which is more Mazoyeres”). Morris found “an enormous volume of fine dark fruit here,” praising its “excellent concentration” and its “long and sensual finish.” We found it beautiful, with dark briary blackberry fruit mixing with gingerbread and warm earth. We think Morris’s 95-97 rating is well deserved. If you have the budget and patience, this will be magnificent.

Gros farms small plots of vines across the tiny appellation, and today’s offer is for one of our favorites: the premier cru “Aux Brûlées.” Located just 10 feet from the famous “Richebourg” Grand Cru, this vineyard turns out extraordinary wine year in and year out. Burghound (91-93 points): There is a wonderfully seductive mouth feel to the rich, velvety and sappy medium weight plus flavors that brim with dry extract and minerality on the lingering finale where the firm tannic spine arrives in a rush...

Michel Gros is as much a part of Vosne-Romanée as the pointed steeple, the ancient vineyards, and the narrow crooked streets. He is a lifelong resident of the town, as were his father and grandfather before him — his mother was even mayor. The Gros family name has been synonymous with Vosne-Romanée for centuries. Their most famous vineyard is the premier cru monopole “Clos des Réas,” the only one in the appellation. It is a magnificent property, stretching over 2 hectares, and turning out wines described by critics as “supremely elegant,” “opulent” and “genius.”

The wine is impressive in the 2017 vintage, with much density and intensity. Burghound found “notably ripe aromas of dark raspberry, cassis, and spiced plum.” This is a wine that will require a few years in the cellar to show its potential, even in this early-drinking vintage.  But five, ten, or fifteen years down the road, it can be expected to integrate fully and express its fine pedigree.

The Amiots have tended vines in Morey-St-Denis since 1702, and in 2020 welcomed the 10th generation Léon Amiot back to the domaine. He's brought a passion for organic viticulture and low-intervention winemaking. We’ve always loved the wines from the Amiot family, but we’re even more excited about where they’re going. The Grand Cru Clos de la Roche 2022 is built for a very long life. It has dense, dark cherry fruit mixed with a solid dose of oak. There is plenty of power here, and the length is exceptional. But patience will be required to enjoy it near its peak; Burghound (91-94pts) says “this is definitely a wine to buy and cellar as it’s not likely to be especially approachable young,” finding “power and muscle” with an “impressively long, austere, built-to-age and quite serious finale.”
