If you know anything about Margaux, it’s probably about the iconic Chateau Margaux. But there’s lots to the appellation besides the famous First-Growth chateau. Margaux’s sandy, gravel-filled soils produce some of the Left Bank’s most elegant red wines; Jancis Robinson cites their “haunting perfume,” and “silky texture.”

Sophisticated New $24 Bordeaux: 2017 Left-Bank Cru Bourgeois
Vigneron: The Negrier Family is a bit unusual for Bordeaux: a tiny family winery making small-batch, terrific wines from limited terroirs. Nearly all of their wine is sold to local customers who visit the domaine. Vintage: Bordeaux experienced a tough frost in 2017, which cost winemakers nearly half their crop on average. The wines that […]
Velvety 2015 Pomerol: Merlot at its Finest
Pomerol is Bordeaux on a Burgundy scale. The small right bank appellation covers less than three square miles, and is home to only 150 winemakers. But the wines of Pomerol are anything but small. In his landmark World Atlas of Wine, Hugh Johnson calls Pomerol “richest, most velvety and instantly appealing form of red Bordeaux.”
8-Year-Old Pauillac: a “Gem” from Bordeaux’s Left Bank
The famous wine writer Hugh Johnson once wrote, "If one had to single out one commune of Bordeaux to head the list, there would be no argument. It would be Pauillac." Best known for its three superstar chateaux – Latour, Lafite-Rothschild, and Mouton-Rothschild -- Pauillac also offers excellent, less famous wines from its storied terroir.
Bold 2015 St-Emilion: Rich, Muscular 92pt Bordeaux
Most of the world’s Merlot is undistinguished. Its default expression is a soft, rounded wine lacking tannin, acidity, and character. “Global” merlot is smooth and easy, but neither distinctive nor particularly interesting.
Sophisticated New Cru Bourgeois: $24 Red Bordeaux
Bordeaux is full of expensive wines that need cellaring -- here’s a humble, inexpensive, delicious wine with loads of character that’s ready to drink.

White Bordeaux: Crisp, Refreshing, Affordable
For most people French Sauvignon blanc means Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé. But the grape also thrives in Bordeaux. In the Loire the grape is exuberant and fruit forward; Sauvignon blanc from Bordeaux isn’t unfriendly, just a bit less outgoing.
Smooth, Inky Red Bordeaux: 5-Year-Old Saint-Estèphe under $35
We don’t import much Bordeaux. Burgundy’s scale and culture have always fit us better: smaller estates, a less formal atmosphere, etc. But it’s no secret that Bordeaux makes some extraordinary wines, and we’re glad to have some in our portfolio.
92-point Right Bank Bordeaux: “Flat-out delicious”
In general, red Burgundy is subtler than red Bordeaux. There are obvious exceptions: well-aged Margaux can be elegant and ethereal, and Gevrey-Chambertin can be bold and rich. But most often, thin-skinned Pinot Noir from limestone-laden soils of Burgundy is more elegant wines than Merlot and Cabernets from clay-rich earth of Bordeaux.

Velvety $25 Bordeaux for your Weeknight Steak.
The 2015 vintage produced exceptional red wines throughout France. We’ve most recently highlighted some of our favorite examples from Burgundy and the Rhône. But the vintage was just as successful in Bordeaux.
