The nose is floral and dry, with faint pear notes and a hint of apple. Even in a warm year Paget has managed to craft a refreshing cuvée — at a steely 12% alcohol it’s beautifully balanced, and a refreshing break from the palate-coating wines that dominate the market these days. Chateau Larcis Ducasse is a well known estate whose flagship label “flirts with perfection” in good vintages (Jeb Dunnuck). If you’re in need of a serious, mature, sub-$60 Bordeaux, look no further. James Suckling gave the 2018 Murmure a 95, just two points behind the flagship label that year, finding it “elegant…juicy, and fleshy texture…savory…such balance.” This wine stole the show at our tasting in January, and we’re delighted it’s finally arrived. Among a crowded field of other St-Emilions, this showed a beautiful floral nose with violets and plum, and lush, very fresh fruit. As that long stretch has unfolded, our admiration for his style and the quality of his work has only grown. His wines are always clean and pure, made with respect for what the vineyard and season offers in each year, and made to provide pleasure in a wide drinking window.Thomas Morey’s Santenay premier cru Grand Clos Rousseau is from the town that adjoins Chassagne to the south. The slope turns southward there, and the increase in sun makes wine that is more generous and fleshy than the reds of Chassagne. When we tasted the 2023 at the domaine, we found the nose expressive and the fruit dark and ripe. Morey's Grand Clos Roussot always ages beautifully, and the precision and elegance of his style serve the vineyard well. His style is one of restraint and precision. We think of them as “minimalist” white wines — what’s not there (oak, butter, heaviness) is as important as what is there. Morey’s Puligny vines are in Truffiere, a premier cru near the top of the slope near La Garenne. These wines typically need a year or more after bottling to show their real character, and the 2023 is likely to tread the same path. It’s chiseled and precise with delicate fruit and mid-acidity. From Morris: “A gorgeous bouquet, fully ripe but with energy, yellow and green fruit once could almost say, ripe limes and mirabelle. 13.3% natural which makes a great balance. The 2024 vintage is an excellent showcase for his style, with finished wines that are fine examples of what Jasper Morris MW admiringly describes as the "chiselled Thomas Morey style."Like all young Puligny-Montrachet, the 2024 Truffière rewards patience. The bouquet is floral with serious concentration behind the perfume, showing lime notes, impressive tension, and a substantial core of fruit. We found it reductive, stony, and slate-driven, with freshness that comes from the stones more than the acidity and an impossibly long finish.
