Thirtysomething Justine Clerget (Christian’s daughter) is now in charge of this tiny gem of a domaine in Vougeot. She's brought renewed energy, refined techniques, and a passion for organic viticulture. The Clerget wines were always classical, terroir-transparent, old school red Burgundy; Justine has maintained this spirit but added polish and class.Broad, sturdy and delicious, this is not a wine you’ll soon forget. Burghound found “lovely mid-palate texture” and awarded 91-93; Neal Martin found it “very well balanced,” concluding “a solid, well-crafted Vougeot.” This will need at least a few years before opening, and will reward 10-15 with ease.

Particularly in 2022 this is big, powerful wine, with smooth inky fruit resting on broad shoulders. Jasper Morris (93-95 points) called it “a charming and graceful Echezeaux;” Neal Martin suggested a drinking window of 2028-2045, finding it “beautifully defined, with lifted brambly red fruit, sous bois, and incense.”

Neal Martin gave 92-94 points, calling it “very well-crafted” with “fine tannins” and “silky-smooth texture.” Not to be outdone, Jasper Morris gave 92-95, finding “a joyous, almost rumbustious energy,” and “excellent length.”

Justine Clerget now runs her tiny family estate in Vougeot. Since her arrival she’s introduced organic viticulture, refined extraction, and added some whole cluster fermentation. The resulting wines are superb modern Burgundies, full and long with excellent detail and perfect balance. If this is what the Burgundy of the future tastes like, sign us up.Bourgogne 2023, JM 88-89:"Bright mid ruby with a pleasing fresh red fruit. Old vines did not yield too much. Very lively on the palate, with a deep almost lush cherry and raspberry fruit with a well-disciplined finish. Delicious."

Yann Chave’s domaine began in 1970, when his parents made their first purchase of vines and fruit trees in Crozes-Hermitage. After years in Paris, Yann returned home in the 1990s to focus the estate on fine wine, building an impressive reputation in the process. Jancis Robinson writes of his “really artisanal wine with masses of integrity and bags of personality,” while the Wine Advocate calls it “one of the most exciting estates in Crozes-Hermitage.”The Hill of Hermitage has been famous for centuries. Yann Chave’s Hermitage 2023 offers a beautiful floral nose dominated by violets, superb balance across the palate, plenty of concentration without heaviness, and a long, lingering finish. Vinous scored it 94 points, noting “alluring orange rind, crushed violets, white pepper, raspberry compote and softly suggested cedar,” and finding the wine “bursting with aromatic complexity and masterful refinement.”

Vinous awarded it 91 points, finding “black pepper and graphite accents, meticulously accompanied by finely tuned blackberry and dried violets.” It merits the higher price it carries and should continue to please for many years.

Considering the tiny yields achieved from these shriveled grapes, the low price of this wine is remarkable. Voigny’s nose and mouth are full of the classic honeysuckle, apricots and peaches, but it’s the acidity that keeps this wine lively. Many sweet wines lack acidity and fall flat – Voigny is bursting with freshness to balance out its sweetness..There may be no more perfect food-wine pairing than Sauternes with seared foie gras. If your stomach (or conscience) is too sensitive, serve blue cheese as a salty foil instead. Or serve a small glass in place of dessert at the end of the meal. A favorite wine of Thomas Jefferson and George Washington, this iconic wine will round out any cellar with style.
