Red Burgundy Verticals

Drinking multiple vintages of the same wine is an excellent way to get to know a wine. In Burgundy, vintages play an important role in the character of a wine, and tasting the same wine in vertical be an educational (and delicious) experience.

Of course there are two vintage variables with every bottle: the time elapsed from the harvest year, and the patterns of that particular vintage itself. In other words, it’s impossible simultaneously to drink two wines at the same age from different vintages. But in our eyes that only adds another variable of intrigue.

So we’ve collected some red Burgundy vertical trios — the same wine in 3 vintages. Quantities are limited.

(+)
The 2022 red Burgundies are quickly becoming one our favorite vintages. From the warmest, driest year in recent memory, winemakers managed to coax vibrant and beautifully balanced, sporting low alcohol and classic Burgundian finesse. Philippe Cheron is an excellent winemaker farming 10 hectares around the Côte de Nuits -- limited oak, whole clusters where needed, sleek, modern, terroir-transparent, muscled Burgundies. The wine from the Clos du Couvent, the village-level Gevrey-Chambertin monopole from which the Domaine takes its name, is excellent in 2022. Jasper Morris MW found “clean raspberry-cherry fruit, medium bodied, rather stylish,” and Burghound praised its “pretty red and blue pinot fruit, soft spice, and prominent earth influence.”

(+)
The Gros family has made wine in Vosne for nearly 200 years, and for a long time his mother was the town’s mayor. Today Michel’s domaine is world famous as a top source for red Burgundy, and the wines from Vosne are at the heart of his lineup. The 2015 Vosne-Romanée is simply extraordinary wine. The nose shows violets and dried roses, redcurrants and a bit of spice. The mouth is intense and lively but smoothed, with silky ripe tannins in perfect balance with the dark pinot noir fruit.

(+)
The “Clos du Meix des Ouches” is a small monopole at the edge of the town. It’s surrounded by an old wall, which helps block the wind and trap warmth, making its wines particularly round. Today the nose is floral and nicely balanced, with a mixture of violets, pan drippings, ginger, soy, and cherries. The mouth shows perfectly ripened tannins and a long, vibrant finish -- we expect it to improve for another decade or two. Jancis Robinson found it “rather gorgeous,” finding it has “already lots of pleasure but with the tannins to keep it in shape.” Burghound found it “solidly concentrated” and “sleekly textured,” predicting “this attractive effort should drink relatively well early.”

(+)
Neal Martin on Prunier's 2019s: “they might not oblige superlatives, yet they represent honest and true reflections of their terroirs…considering that these continue to be sold at very reasonable prices, they are certainly worth looking out for.” If past performance is any indication this should be a lovely, ethereal, old-school red Burgundy in a few years. Martin awarded 90-92, finding a “well defined bouquet” with “a fine bead of acidity” on the palate, concluding “impressive density…good long term potential.” This is very 2019 – perfectly formed and tightly coiled. Given time this should provide excellent return on investment.

(+)
This is our fifth vintage buying from Sofie Bohrmann, a domaine in Meursault whose wines we discovered in a Beaune restaurant. Her wines are quietly brilliant, many hailing from well-known vineyards in St-Aubin, Puligny and Meursault. Her 2022 white Burgundies are terrific – low in alcohol, full of ripe fruit and excellent freshness, with terrific concentration and appealing textures. Sofie's village-level Puligny Montrachet is one of the secret gems of her domaine. Puligny often requires several years to become accessible, but this cuvée drinks well (and classically) from the start. There's a delicate spine of Puligny stones behind the intense fruit – think pears and green apple – but with accessible mouthfeel and a friendly bouquet.

(+)
With such impressive terroir, much of Prunier’s job is to get out of the way – and their understated style is a perfect match. Wine writer Matt Kramer celebrates Prunier’s “signature-free winemaking” in Caillerets, explaining they “do an outstanding job with it,” concluding, “a great Caillerets.” The 2018 Prunier Caillerets is a delight — the nose is rich and enticing, showing violets, dark chocolate and raspberries. The mouth is balanced, silky, and very long, with terrific density. Alongside a smooth, chalky minerality, look for notes of cassis and forest floor. Jasper Morris awarded 92 points, finding balance between “weight, charm, class, structure,” and concluding “a wine to be proud of.”

(+)
Chassagne-Montrachet is best known for its whites, of course, and the Clos Pitois produces one of the best premier crus of the village. Clos Pitois blanc 2018 is a big wine, juicy and round with plenty of body. Its fruit is ripe lemon and orchard fruit, which balances well with its noticeable oak. The finish is long. Burghound found the wine “nicely focused” and predicted that it would “drink reasonably well young while repaying short to perhaps medium-term cellaring.”

(+)
A few years ago Clive Coates MW named the Domaine Michel Gros in the top 17 domaines in all of Burgundy — a list that included Romanée-Conti, Leroy, and Comtes Lafon — highlighting the “nobility and elegance” of his wines. Just outside the town’s most famous vineyard “Le Musigny,” Michel Gros cultivates a small collection of village-level vines. From this plot and three other smaller parcels, Gros crafts what may be the silkiest wine in his lineup: the village-level Chambolle-Musigny.

(+)
WA 94-96 "When tasting the barrels likely to be part of the 2018 Cornas Vin Noir, it was immediately apparent that there's a step up in intensity, likely from the generally older vines that provide fruit for this cuvée. Violets and cassis in some instances, roasted meat and mocha in others, but always with great intensity. Full-bodied, velvety and plush, with long finishes, these components should yield an outstanding finished wine."

(+)
Roger and Julie Belland are 5th and 6th generation growers in Santenay -- their wines are perennial favorites among our readers, offering early drinking and friendly pricetags. Belland’s are always delicious and precocious, but in 2020 they’re even better than usual. This shows Volnay’s signature silky tannins, and a long, lush finish. Belland fermented this wine with 100% whole cluster this year to provide definition to the concentrated fruit, and the wine is perfectly balanced. Burghound called it “rich, seductively textured and velvety.” We were struck by the complex aromas of dark fruit and spice, and as usual were impressed with its elegance.

(+)
The Grand Cru of Corton is massive. Stretching across a prominent hill just north of Beaune, the vineyard covers 236 acres, just 40 less than the entire appellation of Morey-St-Denis. The terroirs vary widely across the giant vineyard, and so it’s further divided into dozens of smaller “climats.” The finest of these are the three farthest north in the middle of the slope: Bressandes, Clos du Roi, and Renardes. The humble family domaine of Gaston and Pierre Ravaut has made wine from the hill of Corton for generations. Longtime local customers account for the majority of their business, and there’s barely a sign on the front door. The Ravauts make excellent whites and reds from the towns surrounding the hill, but the jewel of their collection is their plot of Grand Cru Corton-Bressandes.

Antonio Galloni of Vinous called the 2016 Destieux a "terrific showing." When the wine was still in the barrel, he rated it 90-93; but in January of 2019 he upped the rating to 94, calling it a “gorgeous, modern St. Emilion” that offers “tremendous depth, . . . dark, jammy fruit, chocolate, spice, and new leather.” His colleague Neal Martin said it was “among the best wines I have tasted from this estate.”

Vinous's Antonio Galloni was effusive about Poggerino's 2016 Chianti Classico Riserva. Awarding 95 points and calling it “a total knockout,” he wrote of its “superb depth and textural richness.” We agree — the mouthfeel of this wine is extraordinary, combining a palate-coating intensity with balance, fine tannins and polish. Galloni concluded by calling it “fabulous in every way,” and suggesting a drinking window beginning in 2024.

(+)
Bohrmann doesn’t sound very French, and it isn’t — Sofie Borhmann is Belgian, and splits her time between Belgium and Burgundy. We’re not sure where she’s been hiding, or why no other American importers have found her. But her wines simply blew us away. The 2018 vintage shows beautifully dark ripe fruit. It is very Côte de Nuits, with deep earthy flavor and briary notes. There’s plenty of black currant fruit and the promise of interesting aromas to come as the wine takes on a few years of age. For wines of power and longevity, Gevrey is the big dog of the Côte d’Or.

(+)
In Chambolle-Musigny, we chose Clos de l’Orme in the 2020 vintage. It was vinified with 25% whole bunches, making a wine that is bigger than one often finds in Chambolle. Look for classic Chambolle silkiness, with a spiced nose and outstanding length. Jasper Morris found “deep dark fruit” with “blackberry and blueberry on the nose.” Vinous’s Neal Martin praised the same wine as “fleshy and very easy-drinking.” Martin concluded: “Fine cohesion with just the right amount of tension on the finish, this is a well-crafted Chambolle-Musigny that will be difficult to resist in its youth.”

(+)
For more than fifteen years we thought of Poggerino as our secret, but the word is definitely out now. Vinous’s Antonio Galloni considers their wines “some of the purest expressions of the Sangiovese grape in Italy." The Chianti Classico “Riserva Bugialla” 2019 offers a different texture from the Classico. It is richer and more full-bodied than the Classico 2020, with dark red fruit and mouth-filling roundness. Galloni thought that “Black cherry, incense, leather and spice give this virile Riserva plenty of complexity.” He called it a “dark, powerful wine, . . . impressive, especially in terms of its depth and overall substance.”

Vinous's Antonio Galloni writes: "Piero Lanza makes wines of notable character that capture all the finesse of Radda. I find a purity in these wines that is incredibly distinctive." Piero Lanza's Chianti Classico “Riserva Bugialla” 2020 has even greater aging potential than the regular cuvée. Galloni called it a “potent, brooding wine” and gave “93+” points. He found that “macerated dark cherry, licorice, leather, tobacco and smoke all flesh out over time.”  The wine spent nearly two months on the skins, followed by malolactic in cement and two years in large oak casks. Galloni thought that “this young, potent Riserva has a bright future.”

“Beautiful and bountiful,” writes Jasper Morris of the 2022 red Burgundies; “very good wines and plenty of them.”  William Kelley calls them “succulent, suave and charming”, “offering excellence in both colors and in a wide variety of styles.”  Roger Belland's reds are entirely classic, with ripe modern fruit but traditional, low-alcohol textures. Belland's Volnay is from Santenots, among the town's best premier crus. Burghound called it "lovely" and "outstanding" with an "agreeably fresh nose [that] reflects notes of kirsch, dark cherry, poached plum and violet," and a palate with "rich and seductively textured full-bodied flavors."

With the 2020 vintage, the Domaine Pierre Amiot has become the Domaine Amiot et Fils. Jean-Louis’s brother Didier has gone off on his own, and son Léon has joined Jean-Louis and Chantal in the business. The Morey St. Denis 1er cru “Les Millandes” is aromatically similar to Charmes, but bigger wine with more structure and a drinking window that opens just a little later than Charmes (30% new oak, 30% whole clusters). The structure is serious and polished, with fine tannins that carry through the long, clean finish.

Most Champagne, including our primary source Pascal Bardoux, comes from the area surrounding Reims. But Robin is in the increasingly popular Côte des Bar, a southern satellite subregion of Champagne about half way between Reims and Dijon. The Secret de Sorbée is fermented partially in barrel and left on the lees for over two years. The resulting wine is toasty and fresh with lovely apple fruit and floral notes. The Guide Hachette awarded a star, and called it “at once round and tart,” with a “pleasant, intense fruit expression.”

(+)
Bressandes, along with Renard and Clos du Roi, is considered the finest plot on the famous hill. The nose is massive and perfumed, with wild red fruits, fresh violets, and cocoa. The mouth is big, smooth, young and compact — Corton is a traditionally long-lived wine, and the Ravaut domaine has avoided modernizing the style. Kelley found it “full bodied, fleshy and elegantly muscular,” concluding “it has turned out very well.” Give this 5 years at least, and 10 if you can manage.

From old vines, clay-rich Gevrey terroir, and an unusually bold vintage, this is as muscly and intense as red Burgundy gets. The blend of sweet fruit and oak recall a big time Pomerol in the mouth, though the essential character is of course Burgundian. Burghound found “notes of poached plum, black cherry jam, and subtle hints of spice, warm earth and the sauvage.” In fact, the 2018 is closer to a Grand Cru than usual in intensity and sheer size. (+)
At the Domaine Michel Gros, 2020 brings another stellar lineup of beautiful red Burgundies, very much in the style of the superb 2019s. The 2020 growing season in the Côte de Nuits was much like 2019: hot, sunny, dry, and very early. The Chambolle-Musigny (more than half of which comes from “Argillieres,” a lieu dit that adjoins the great Grand Cru vineyard Le Musigny) always matures at a rate more like a premier cru than a village; and 2020 will be no different. The blend of fruit and oak seem just right — Burghound found “notes of cassis and poached plum with those of violet, spice and a whiff of warm earth” — and the wine should be excellent for many years.

Most years the domaine makes two Grand Cru…
(+)
Most years the domaine makes two Grand Cru reds from Corton, one from the “Bressandes” vineyard and one from “Mourottes;” but in 2020 quantities were low enough that Vincent blended them into a single Corton Grand Cru. As he described it, the wine combines “the heat of Bressandes with the freshness of Corton.” It is indeed a big wine, very dense with fine-grained tannins, and will need some patience to realize its potential. When it is ready, though, it is sure to offer a very impressive glass. Look for dark cassis notes with plum and gingerbread. We doubt Vincent will go back to combining these two Grand Cru plots once he has the volume, but it’s an awfully nice combination.

Martin characterizes them as an “old-school producer” with “premier crus worth hunting down, as they represent good value.” Prunier’s finest wine is from Volnay’s finest vineyard, the premier cru “Caillerets.” The nose is dark and brooding, full of ripe cassis and toast. The mouth is classic Volnay, silky and elegant, but with an extra dose of muscle this year. Martin gave 90-92, finding “fine tannins, fresh and vibrant,” and remarking it “should age well in bottle.”

Look up “Thomas Morey” in the proverbial Ansonia winemaker dictionary, and you’ll find words like “deliberate,” “thoughtful,” “minimalist,” “precise.” Morey’s cellar style is as clean and detailed as his wire rimmed glasses and his Zalto stemware.  You might imagine a hot dry year like 2022 would threaten to blur his crisp, focused style, but Morey has turned in a classic vintage, and each cuvée perfectly reflects its terroir. The vines in Chassagne 1er cru Embrazées are 63 years old, planted by Thomas’s grandfather in a field that had been abandoned after phylloxera. The 2022 is a stunner – long and lithe with deep fruit channeled beautifully into a concentrated core that ripples with energy and intensity. Morey’s usual restraint is in effect, and the wine is rich without an ounce of heaviness.

The Domaine des Varoilles is named for the Clos des Varoilles, a huge 6-hectare premier cru monopole located among the best premier crus in Gevrey-Chambertin. Historical documents reference its initial planting in the 12th century, and it’s from this vineyard that today’s wine comes. The terroirs of Gevrey-Chambertin produce the meatiest and most intense red wines in all of Burgundy. The Varoilles winemaking style is toward richness and density, and when married to their exceptional terroir, results in wines of impressive intensity. The 2014 Varoilles is exceptional, with inky notes of plum, earth, cassis, and a hint of sauvage. Allen Meadows (Burghound) found it “velvety” and “super rich” with a “firm, serious, and powerful finish,” and awarded 92 points.

Burghound awarded 91 points, finding it “impressively concentrated” and calling it “a wine of finesse.” After revisiting the wine a year after his initial tasting, he named it “particularly outstanding” for its appellation. Old vines (planted in the 1950s), exceptional terroir, expert winemaking, and an excellent vintage -- all make it hard to find much wrong with this wine. It’s not exactly cheap, but the best in any category rarely is.

Poggerino’s finest wine is their Chianti Classico Riserva called “Bugialla.” Like Poggerino’s other wines, this is pure, unblended Sangiovese. But the Riserva comes from their oldest vines -- nearly 45 years old now -- and is raised carefully in oak before bottling. Poggerino holds it a full year in the bottle before releasing it to the public. JANCIS ROBINSON: Lustrous ruby. Quite sweetly perfumed nose with plenty of depth. Juicy, crunchy red fruit on the palate, followed by firm, chewy tannins on the finish. Closes up a little but this wine shows true craftsmanship in a very difficult vintage.

Allen Meadows (Burghound) awarded 93 points, finding "aromas of plum liqueur, black raspberry, warm earth and a touch of the sauvage. This vineyard lies at the top of the slope in Vosne, adjoining the Grand Cru Richebourgs and the Premier Crus Aux Brûlées and Henri Jayer’s famous “Clos Parantoux.” (The view alone is worth the trip to see it.)  This wine blew us away – impossibly fine and delicate, but with density and length. The shallow limestone soil and unusual north-easterly exposition balance the extreme ripeness of the vintage, and the resulting wine is a masterpiece.
